Why do we need a new shelter?
Anyone who has been to the shelter knows the awful deteriorated condition it is in. From the crumbling foundation, rotten window jambs, outdated gutters which regularly clog and harbor harmful germs. To the inadequate heating and cooling systems. In the winter frost and ice build up on the floors and guillotine doors of the dog pens. Lack of secure and easy to access outdoor exercise pens for the dogs.
There are only 10 dog pens and 10 cat pens. Quite often this is not enough room to meet the needs of the counties animals that are strays or animals that are being relinquished and the shelter staff turns many away. Unfortunately according to the shelter manager, the County and Animal Shelter Board will not allow for a much larger facility to be built as additional yearly funding for upkeep and staff will not be provided.
Of the 10 dog pens only 7 have access to the outside. These outside pens are small, cramped with the same cement floors and cement block walls as the inside pens. Some of which have weakened and become wobbly and unsafe.
There is no examination room, no where to quarantine sick animals, no where to bathe or groom animals.
Crumbling foundation.
